Search engine optimisation (SEO)

Search engine optimisation is a methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) — including Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines.

Get found online is hugely important for most of us, but of course the competition to get noticed is fierce. Therefore unless you have an unlimited budget, it makes sense to truly understand what you can about Google and the other search engines.

If you are relatively inexperienced in this field, I recorded a podcast with the excellent Mark Williams-Cook of Candour which is well worth listening too: SEO Explained

Understand what your target customers are looking for

In essence you need to understand what your target customers are looking for. And crucially, in their language not yours! What terms and words will they use when searching online? Most people will now be quite specific in the search terms they use, but they may not be using those you expect.

You can use a variety of online tools that may help work out the best terms and words to use. Of course it makes sense to ask your existing customers what they would look for, and truly understanding their needs and what they value, is totally invaluable. Any new inquiries you can try and work out what terms they used, if they can remember!
